Conditions for entitlement to increased child support to 21 years of age
Evaluation system
In this case, considerations are not confined to the illness or the handicap in itself. Also
taken into account, are the consequences of the illness or the handicap for the child and his/her family.
The consequences of the disorder suffered by the child are
considered on three levels:
- in terms of the physical or mental disability of the child (pillar 1)
- in terms of the activity and participation of the child (pillar 2)
- in terms of the child’s family environment (pillar 3)
For each level, the consequences are expressed in a score. A child is entitled to a supplement
if it has :
- or at least 6 points in the three levels together
- or at least 4 points for the first level
Transitional measure for children born before 1 January 1993
The old evaluation system applies to children born before 1 January 1993 during the period before
1 May 2009. If they already receive increased child allowances under the old evaluation system on 1 May
2009, the old evaluation system continues to apply until the new evaluation system (due to a review request
or an automatic review) applies to them.
The old evaluation system consist of:
- certified to be at least for 66 % physically or mentally disabled
- the disablement must commence at a time when the child is still entitled to child benefits
Example: not yet 18, student, apprentice
Note: After the age of 21 and until 25 at the latest,
a handicapped child can remain entitled to the normal benefits (child benefit, orphan allowance, etc.)
if he or she meets all the other conditions to be entitled to such allowances.
